Traditional Western Herbalism
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Traditional Western Herbalism is a course that gives us a chance to reexamine our vibrant past traditions and stay true to our roots as herbalist in America. Traditional Western Herbalism places the function of western herbs in their true historical context, apart from homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine, and Ayurveda. Those aforementioned systems usually dominate the discussion of herbal practitioners due to the myth that we do not have an herbal system in America. To remedy the situation, as aspiring herbalist, we will study and learn the old-time practices and reconstruct them for modern use. This course is a powerful tool for holistic theory and treatment, and awareness of over 300 herbs and their properties and uses. Plant medicines, because they are made from a broad range of chemical components, are naturally suited for the treatment of general patterns in the body. Western herbalism is based upon Pharmocognosy, the study of natural products which includes the identification, methods, and applications of specific plant constituents responsible for specific therapeutic actions, such as the use of digoxin from digitalis leaf for heart failure. Be ready to be enlightened!
